Key Takeaways
- In Texas, the shop is your choice — not your insurer’s. The Texas Department of Insurance Consumer Bill of Rights says so in plain language, and it covers parts as well as labour.
- Certifications, a written estimate, and a warranty you can read are the three signals worth checking. Everything else on a body shop’s website is marketing.
- Ask what the warranty actually covers, and for how long. Auto Clinique’s is one year on parts and labour, in writing. A shop that will not put a term on paper is telling you something.
- Not every dent needs paint. Matching the repair method to the damage is where most of the cost difference lives.
- Estimates are free and same-day at our Preston Road shop — you can get a number before you commit to anything.
Searching for the best auto body shop in Plano turns up a wall of near-identical claims. Every shop says it is certified. Every shop says it is trusted. Very few of them tell you how to check.
So this page does the opposite of a sales pitch. Below is the list we would hand a friend who asked how to judge a body shop in North Dallas — the questions, the paperwork to ask for, and the rights you already have under Texas law before you speak to anyone. Auto Clinique has repaired vehicles from the same Preston Road location since 2007, and we are comfortable being measured against this list.
What actually separates a good Plano body shop from an average one
Four things are checkable before you hand over your keys. The rest is atmosphere.
Certification you can name. “Certified technicians” means nothing on its own. Ask which certification. In collision and mechanical work the recognised ones include ASE (National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence), I-CAR, and manufacturer programmes run by individual carmakers. Auto Clinique holds ASE certification alongside TechNet and Standard Motor Products accreditation. A shop that cannot name its certifying body does not have one.
A written estimate before work starts. Not a number over the phone, and not a range. A written estimate lets you compare shops on the same footing and gives you something to hold the shop to afterwards. Ours are free and same-day.
A warranty with a term on it. This is the single most revealing question you can ask. “Lifetime” sounds generous until you read what it excludes. A specific term, in writing, covering both parts and labour, is worth more than an open-ended promise. Auto Clinique’s is one year, parts and labour.
Honesty about what your car needs — including when it needs less. A shop that recommends a full respray for a scuff, or conventional bodywork for a dent that paintless repair would fix, is either not looking closely or is looking at your insurance limit. The right answer is sometimes the smaller invoice.
Your rights in Texas, before you choose anything
Most people phone their insurer first and go wherever they are sent. You do not have to, and North Texas drivers dealing with a hail claim should know this before the first call.
The Texas Department of Insurance publishes a Consumer Bill of Rights for personal automobile insurance. Right 23 reads:
“You have the right to choose the repair shop and replacement parts for your vehicle. An insurance company may not specify the brand, type, kind, age, vendor, supplier, or condition of parts or products used to repair your automobile.”
Two things follow from that. Your insurer may give you a list of preferred shops, and it may decline to pay more than a reasonable amount — but it cannot require you to use one of them, and it cannot dictate the parts that go on your car. If a claims handler implies otherwise, that is worth pushing back on.
Auto Clinique works directly with insurance companies on claims, so choosing us does not mean taking on the paperwork yourself. If you want the process laid out step by step, we wrote it up in our guide to filing a collision insurance claim in Dallas.
The questions to ask before you hand over the keys
Take this list to any shop you are considering, including ours. The answers tell you more than the waiting room does.
| Ask this | Why it matters | Auto Clinique’s answer |
|---|---|---|
| Which certifications do your technicians hold? | Names a standard you can verify independently | ASE, TechNet, Standard Motor Products |
| How long have you been at this location? | Shops that move often are harder to hold to a warranty | Same Preston Road location since 2007 |
| Is the estimate free, written, and same-day? | Lets you compare shops honestly | Yes to all three |
| What exactly does the warranty cover, and for how long? | An open-ended promise is harder to enforce than a dated one | One year, parts and labour |
| Will you work directly with my insurer? | Decides who chases the adjuster — you or the shop | Yes, on any carrier |
| Can this be repaired without repainting? | Separates shops that assess from shops that quote | We tell you when paintless repair is the better option |
| Who will actually be working on my car? | Some shops subcontract paint or glass off-site | Collision, paint, glass, mechanical and electrical are all in-house |
Match the repair to the damage, not to the estimate
Most of the price difference between two quotes on the same car comes from method, not from hourly rate. These are the four situations we see most often in Plano and North Dallas.
Hail damage. North Texas gets hit most springs, and a hail-struck panel is usually dozens of shallow dents with the paint intact. That is the textbook case for paintless repair — the factory finish stays on the car. Full detail on our hail damage restoration page.
Door dings, creases and lease-return damage. Same principle, smaller scale, and often done while you wait. See dent repair and paintless dent removal for when the method works and the cases where it does not.
Collision damage. Once paint is broken, metal is stretched, or structure is involved, the repair moves to conventional bodywork and refinishing. Our auto body repair page covers the process and what drives the cost.
Glass. A chip caught early is a repair. Left to spread across the driver’s line of sight, it becomes a replacement, and on newer vehicles that can mean recalibrating camera-based driver-assist systems too.
Colour is where a repair is judged. If you want to understand why two panels can leave a shop looking subtly different, our explainer on colour matching in paint and body repair goes through how it is actually done.
Specialist work: luxury, European and electric vehicles
Not every car should go to a general body shop without asking first. Aluminium panels behave differently from steel and need slower, more careful work. Several European makes use them for hoods and doors. Electric vehicles add high-voltage safety procedures and structural layouts that differ from a combustion car’s.
We see Audi, BMW, Mercedes, Lexus, Land Rover and Range Rover work regularly at the Preston Road shop, and we handle Tesla and EV body repair as a distinct service rather than as an afterthought. If you want a finish beyond a factory colour match — a custom or show-quality respray — that is covered under custom auto paint and body work.
For customers who would rather not spend a morning on it at all, we also offer a concierge auto body service with collection and return.
What it costs, and why two estimates differ
Anyone who quotes a firm price for “a dent” without seeing the car is guessing. Cost moves with the size and depth of the damage, whether it sits on a body line, whether the panel is steel or aluminium, whether the back of the panel can be reached, and whether the paint is broken.
That last one is the big fork in the road. Paint intact usually means paintless repair and a lower number. Paint broken means filling, priming, refinishing and blending into the neighbouring panels. Our guide to car paint and body repair costs breaks the ranges down properly.
Get the estimate in writing from two shops before you decide. If one comes in dramatically lower, the question to ask is what it leaves out.
What to expect at Auto Clinique
We are a family-owned shop on Preston Road, not a franchise, and we have been at this address since 2007. Collision, paint, glass, interior, mechanical and electrical work all happen under one roof, so a car with more than one problem does not need more than one shop.
- Free same-day estimates, written, with no obligation
- One-year parts and labour warranty on our work
- Direct insurance coordination on any carrier
- 5% discount for seniors, military and first responders
- Free car wash on repairs over $350
- Yelp Best Beloved Business, 2023
Customers who leave us reviews tend to name the people rather than the paintwork — Jackson for keeping them posted, Robert for explaining what needed doing and why, Ray for making the whole thing painless. That is the part we are proudest of.
Frequently asked questions
Can my insurance company make me use their body shop in Texas?
No. The Texas Department of Insurance Consumer Bill of Rights states that you have the right to choose the repair shop and the replacement parts for your vehicle, and that an insurer may not specify the brand, type, kind, age, vendor, supplier or condition of the parts used. Your insurer can recommend shops and is not obliged to pay more than a reasonable amount, but the choice of shop is yours.
How do I check whether a body shop is really certified?
Ask which body certified them, then verify it with that body rather than with the shop. ASE, I-CAR and individual manufacturer programmes all publish their own listings. A shop that answers “certified” without naming a certifying organisation has not answered the question.
What should a body shop warranty cover?
At minimum, both parts and labour, with a stated term, in writing. Read what is excluded as carefully as what is included. Auto Clinique warrants its work for one year on parts and labour.
Do I need to get more than one estimate?
Two is sensible on anything substantial. Estimates are free at Auto Clinique and at most reputable shops, so a second opinion costs you time rather than money. Compare what each estimate includes, not only the total at the bottom.
How long does auto body repair take in Plano?
It depends on the damage, on parts availability, and — on an insurance job — on how quickly the adjuster approves. A small paintless dent repair can be done the same day. Structural collision work runs considerably longer. We give you a timeframe with the written estimate rather than a guess on the phone, and tell you if it changes.
Will a repair show up on my vehicle history report?
An insurance claim generally does. A repair you pay for yourself generally does not, because nothing is reported to the claims databases these reports draw on. This is one reason some drivers pay out of pocket for smaller damage rather than claiming.
Does Auto Clinique work on RVs?
No. We service cars, SUVs and light trucks. RV body work is a different vertical and we would rather tell you that up front than take the booking.
